Lesson Forty - Five

RESURRECTION

MEMORY VERSE: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God. Job. 19:26.

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 15:1-23
INTRODUCATION: The question of whether or not there is life after death is as old as man himself. For example, Job asked the question several years before Christ was born (Job 14:14). And somehow man knew the answer to the question (Job 19:26). Yes, there is life after death. The dead shall rise again.

LESSON OUTLINES
1.    DID CHRIST RESURRECT?
2.    HAS THE CHRISTIAN ANY HOPE OF RESURRECTION?
3.    WHAT HAPPENS AT THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD?
4.    WHAT HAPPENS TO THE BODY?
5.    WILL WE RECOGNIZE ONE ANOTHER IN HEAVEN?
6.    CONCLUSION.

1.    DID CHRIST RESURRECT?
Paul gives a definite answer to this question in 1 Cor. 15:20. But apart from Paul, there were many who witnessed Jesus’ bodily resurrection.
(a) Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene (Jn. 20:17).
(b) The Lord appeared to the women (Mk.16:1-3).
(c) He also appeared to Peter (Mk. 16:7).
(d) He appeared to the disciples on the Emmaus Road (LK. 24:16)
(e) To the eleven disciples (Lk. 24:33).
(f) He also appeared to about five hundred brethren (1 Cor. 15:6)
(g)He certainly appeared to the eleven at Bethany where He ascended. You can read about this at home in     LK. 24:36:51.

2.    HAS THE CHRISTIAN ANY HOPE OF RESURRECTION?
The entire faith of the Christian rests or falls with the resurrection (1 Cor. 15:17-18). If Christ did not die and rise from the dead then
(a) Our faith is in Vain;
(b) We are yet in our Sins;
(c) All who have died in the Lord have perished
(d) There will be no future re-unions with loved ones.
But, Praise the Lord, Christ did rise from the dead. And because Christ rose from the dead, every man, woman and child shall rise from the dead.

3.    WHAT HAPPENS AT THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD?
The resurrection is to be in stages:
(a) Christ was the first to rise (1 Cor. 15:20).
(b) Then the saints who slept before that first resurrection morning rose next (Matt. 27:52-53).
(c) Then on the second resurrection morning, there will be the resurrection of all Christians who had slept      since Christ rose from the dead. This is called the resurrection of life (Jn. 5:28-29). Only dead born-again      Christians shall rise at this time.
(d) The wicked dead shall “Sleep” on for another 1000 years before they resurrect to face eternal damnation      (Rev. 20:5)
So we see that some will rise to eternal blessing, while others will rise and be cast into hell forever.

4     WHAT HAPPENS TO THE BODY?
There are some who deny the resurrection of the body, saying that the post-resurrection product will be a spirit only. (1 Cor. 15:44) says it is raised a spiritual body, not a spirit without a body. In 1 Cor. 15:35 there are two questions.
(a) How are the dead raised up?
(b) With what body do they come?
Then the answers follow in the following verses:
(i) It is not the same body, but a transformed one, just as the plant is different from the seed that was planted     (v. 37).
(ii) It is a God-given body
(iii) It will be a body suited in every way to the individual spirit (v. 38);
(iv) It will be an incorruptible body incapable of death or decay (V. 42). Those condemned in hell will have this      indestructible body because the normal human body would just disintegrate in hell;
(v) It will be a glorious body for Christians (V.43) and a body with power;
(vi) Finally, it will be a spiritual body with flesh and bones (v.44). But it will have no blood (Lk. 23:39).

5.    WILL WE RECOGNIZE ONE ANOTHER IN HEAVEN?
Of course, yes because we will be known there as we are known on earth (1 Cor. 13:12). For example, Peter, James and John recognized Moses and Elijah in Matt. 17:4; though they had never met before? The question is: will you be there in heaven?

6.    CONCLUSION
On the resurrection morning, the Redeemed of the Lord shall sing a song of victory, 1 Cor. 15:54-57. “Death is swallowed up in victory. The sting of death is gone. The grave has lost its victory. Victory is ours through Christ.” Will you be there?
