Lesson Four

YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN

MEMORY VERSE: Except a man be born-again he cannot see the kingdom of God. John 3:3.

BIBLE PASSAGE: John 3:1-1
INTRODUCTION: What do we mean when we say someone has been born again? What is new birth? New birth is the creation of a new life in man by the Holy Spirit. All men were born into the family of Satan because every man born of woman is born unclean. (Job. 25:4). Therefore in order to become a member of the family of God, a new birth becomes necessary. The person who is born again has a second birthday and begins a new life.

LESSON OUTLINES
1a.    WHY IS A NEW BIRTH NECESSARY?
  b.    WHO NEEDS A NEW BIRTH?
2.      IS THE NEW BIRTH THE SAME AS BAPTISM?
3.      WHO ARE THE PARENTS OF THE BORN AGAIN MAN?
4.      HOW DO I BECOME BORN AGAIN?
5.      HOW DO I KNOW THAT I AM BORN AGAIN?

1a.    WHY IS A NEW BIRTH NECESSARY?
We are all born sinners. There is terrible wickedness deep within us (Jere. 17:9). We may try to suppress it through home-training or education but anytime someone really offends us, the animal in us will rear its terrible head. (Jere. 13:23). It is impossible for us to be truly good deep within us without a rebirth. Now God says we must be holy in order to see Him. (Heb.12:14). But holiness is foreign to anyone who is not born again. He was born in sin, enjoys sinning. It is through the new birth that a man can live holy life.

b.      WHO NEEDS A NEW BIRTH?
Who needs to be born again? Is it only religious people like Nicodemus or a persecutor like Saul of Tarsus? Is it the rich, the educated or the poor and unlearned? Everybody needs to be born again. (Jn. 3:3, 7). There are no exceptions, male and female, young and old, white, yellow or black all must be born again. (Gal.6:15). That includes you.

2.      IS THE NEW BIRTH THE SAME AS BAPTISM?
The new birth is not baptism. Baptism is a Church ordinance signifying that one is a Christian and has died with Christ, been buried, risen with Christ and is now living daily with Him. The new birth is a decorated but an entirely new man.

3.      WHO ARE THE PARENTS OF BORN AGAIN MAN?
Just as we have parents during our first birth, so also we have parents during our second birth. The parents of the born again man are (a) Jesus Christ, the Word. (1 Pet. 1:23) and (b) The Holy Spirit. (John 3:5,6). The Author of the new birth is God the Father (John 6:44), the channel of the new birth is God the Son. (John 3:16) and executor i.e. the one who makes the new birth possible is God the Holy Spirit (John 6:63). In one word, anyone who is born again becomes a child of God.

4.      HOW DO I BECOME BORN AGAIN?
To be born again you must believe Jesus Christ who is the Word of God. (1 Pet. 1; 25). That is you must believe what the Bible says about you. (a) That you are a sinner. (Rom. 3:23) (b) That unless you turn to Jesus Christ for the salvation of your soul, you shall perish. (Rom. 6:23) (C) That you must receive Jesus Christ into your life as both Saviour and Lord (John 1:12). Then call on the name of the Lord! (Rom. 10:13).

5.      HOW DO I KNOW THAT I AM BORN AGAIN?
Any one who is born again will have the following evidences.
        (a) He will live a righteous life. (1 Jn 2:29).
        (b) He will no longer be able to sin. (1 Jn 3:9).
        (c) He will learn to love. (1 Jn. 4:7).
        (d) He will live an overcoming Life. (1 Jn. 5:4).
        (e) He will believe that Jesus is the Christ. (1 Jn.5:1)
Are all these evidences in your life? If yes, then you are born again, if no you better start praying.
