Lesson Thiry - Three

THE LORD’S COMMANDMENTS

MEMORY VERSE: Ye are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command you. John 15:14.
BIBLE PASSAGE: John 15:10-23
INTRODUCATION: We live in an age of extreme lawlessness with many people believing that Christ abolished or fulfilled the law so that we can do whatever pleases us. Some even believe that once saved, we are saved forever even if we continue to disobey the Lord’s commandments. They claim that since we are under grace we can please ourselves. But this is clearly not so (Rom. 6:1-2; 14:15). This is why it is important that we know what these commandments of our Lord are so that we may start or continue keeping them. Note that a commandment is an order that must be obeyed.

LESSON OUTLINES
1.   COMMANDMENTS ON REPENTANCE
2.   COMMANDMENTS ON FOLLOWING THE LORD AND PRAYER
3.   COMMANDMENTS ON FAITH, SEARCHING THE SCRIPTURES AND SHINNING
4.   COMMANDMENTS ON OUR DUTY TO GOD, MEN AND AUTHORITY, NEIGHBOURS AND BRETHREN
5.   COMMANDMENTS ON PERFECTION, WITNESSING AND THESECOND COMING OF CHRIST
6.   CONCLUSION

1.   COMMANDMENTS ON REPENTANCE
The most basic of the Lord’s commandments concerns repentance (Matt. 4:17). Repentance is two-fold: Turning from sin and turning to God (Matt. 6:33). We are not only to repent but also to believe the Gospel, believe in Christ and in the Father (Mk. 1:15, Jn. 14:1). These are definite commands that must be obeyed if we are to miss hell and get heaven (Jn. 3:16).

2.   COMMANDMENTS ON FOLLOWING THE LORD AND PRAYER
The believer has no choice but to follow Jesus implicitly. This involves self denial and full determination (Lk. 9:23). The Christian life is to be characterized by prayer and constant watching (LK. 21:36). Why should we pray and what should we pray for? The answers are found in (Lk. 22:40, Lk.10:2 and Lk. 6:28). The order to pray must be obeyed if we are true believers!

3.   COMMANDMENTS ON FAITH, SEARCHING THE SCRIPTURES AND SHINING
In this faithless generation, it is essential to note that the saint of God is made great because he has faith in a great God. This is why Christ gave the command in (Mk. 11:22). Faith is absolutely essential, since without faith, no one can please God. Searching the Scriptures is a daily must for every believer (Jn. 5:39). We are to read, study and remember the Lord’s sayings (Jn. 15:20). Also, each Christian must daily let his light shine brightly (Matt. 5:16). We can start today as soos as we get home (Mk. 5:19).

4.   COMMANDMENTS ON OUR DUTY TO GOD, MAN IN AUTHORITY, NEIGHBOURS AND BRETHERN.
Christians are to love and serve God completely (Mk. 12:30). It is our supreme duty to God to worship Him and Him only (Matt. 4:10) as for men in authority, it is our duty to obey them (Mk. 12:17) and to pray for them (1Tim.2:2). Remember, if they go wrong, we all suffer for it! We also have duties to our neighbours. Our neighbour is any man in need of our help (Matt. 19:19). In dealing with our neighbours, the best way is always to put yourself in their shoes and act accordingly (LK. 6:31). We are commanded never to refuse to help whenever we can (Matt. 5:42). Where other believers, brethren, are concerned, we are to love, forgive and forbear condemnation (Jn. 15:12). We are neither to judge nor condemn one another but rather to forgive (Lk. 6:37).

5.   COMMANDMENTS ON PERFECTION, WITNESSING AND THE SECOND COMING PF CHRIST.
The standard set by our Lord Jesus Christ is very high. It is the standard of God Himself. And He commands us to keep to that standard (Matt. 5:48). One important area where we are to have the same standard as God is in the area of mercy (Lk.6:36). This is an area often ignored by most believers! Otherwise, we will be preaching the Gospel more than we are doing knowing fully well that hell is not a place of joy! (Mk. 16:15-16). This is more so since the second coming of our Lord is nearer than when we first believed (Lk. 12:41). Let us be ready and remain faithful to the end (Matt. 24:13).

6.   CONCLUSION
In this lesson, we have reminded ourselves of some of the commandments of our Lord. Use these commands as a sort of inventory to check your personal lives before God. Jesus Christ gives us these commandments as a guide to follow to the strait gate that opens to glory land. If you wish to enter heaven remember His words of
Jn.14:23, “If a man loves me, he will keep my words.” Do you love Jesus? Have you been keeping His commandments? Do you plan to start now?
