Lesson Twenty -Two

THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT – PART 1

MEMORY VERSE: But when the comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, ever the Spirit of truth, which precedent from the father, He shall testify of me. John 15:26.

BIBLE PASSAGE: John 14:15-26
INTRODUCATION: The Holy Spirit is a Divine Personality who has a definite function in the world. Infact, a study of the Scriptures reveal that the Holy Spirit ahs always been very active. In the Old Testament, the Spirit had a “come and go” ministry (Jud. 6:34, 1 Sam. 16:14) but since Pentecost His ministry has changed somewhat with regard to believers. At Pentecost, He came to indwell believers and abide in the living Church of Jesus Christ (John 14:16). He is still very much active today!

LESSON OUTLINES
1.   HIS FUNCTIONS IN CREATION?
2.   HIS FUNCTIONS IN RELATION TO THE SCRIPTURES?
3.   HIS FUNCTIONS IN RELATION TO CHRIST?
4.   HIS FUNCTIONS IN RELATION TO CHRISTIANS?

1.   HIS FUNCTIONS IN CREATION:
The Holy Spirit was actively involved in the creation of the World (Gen.1:2). He was also very active in the renewal of the World and other living creatures (Ps. 104:30). That is, not only is He involved in creation, but also by the word of God and the Spirit’s Power, need to destroy, He does it at His will (Isa. 40:7). So that whether it is a leaf falling off a tree or a new one budding, the Holy Spirit is involved in both.

2.   HIS FUNCTIONS IN RELATION TO THE SCRIPTURES:
The Holy Spirit is the Author of the Scriptures (11 Pet. 1:20-21). The men who did the actual writings are mere secretaries in the hand of the Holy Spirit. He told them what to write and they simply put it down in writing. They added nothing and omitted nothing. That is why you find in the same Bible the Psalm of Vengeance (Ps. 35) and the beautiful passage on love (1 Cor.13). that is why the failures of the great Apostle Peter and the cruel persecutions of Christians by Saint Paul were not omitted. The Holy Spirit is also the interpreter of the Scriptures to us (Jn. 16:14). It is easy to understand why this is so, because He wrote the Scriptures in the first place. That is why it is impossible to get the true interpretations of the Scriptures from anyone who is not baptized and indwelt by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is also very faithful in bringing back to memory, verses of Scripture in hours of need, particularly when a child of God is faced with difficult questions.

3.   HIS FUNCTIONS IN RELATION TO CHRIST:
To start with, Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit. He (the Holy Spirit) literally brought Jesus Christ forth into the world (Lk. 1:35). Apart from this important fact, the Holy Spirit was actively involved in everything that Jesus did while on earth, in every aspect of His ministry. For example, He led Jesus to the wilderness after baptism to prepare Him for His test (Matt.4:1). He anointed Jesus Christ for His service to humanity, so that it is through the power of the Holy Spirit that Jesus Christ performed all His wondrous miracles (Acts 10:38). The Holy Spirit was even involved in the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ that raised Jesus Christ from the dead on that first resurrection morning (Rom. 1:4). And one of the most solemn messages in the Scriptures is that if we have the same Spirit as Jesus, then on that last resurrection morning we too shall rise and while still alive we shall enjoy Divine health (Rom. 8:11).

4.   HIS FUNCTIONS IN RELATION TO CHRISTIANS:
The works of the Holy Spirit in relation to Christians are so many that we cannot cover them all in one lesson. We can only note briefly here that since Jesus ascended to heaven and is seated on the right hand of God the Father, the Holy Spirit had shifted His attention to the Bride of Jesus that is the Church. One of the things that the Holy Spirit is doing is to strive with men, attempting to turn them from sin to righteousness (Gen. 6:3). He is doing this so that more men might be saved and the Bride of Jesus, the Church, be enlarged. Once a man turns from sin into righteousness and is saved, the Holy Spirit assures him of Sonship and starts the work of making him songlike (Rom. 16:17, Gal. 4:6). Has the Holy Spirit been working on you of recent? Why not yield to Him today?
